Day Four

Day Five

Time passed, sin increased, and more people filled the earth. Signs that God’s kingdom had been broken by sin were growing clearer with each generation. But in this brokenness God had not abandoned his creation. Grieved by sin, he sends a flood to wipe away the sin and evil that had broken his creation. God demonstrates his grace by choosing to preserve the life of a faithful man, Noah, and his family. But Noah was not perfect. He still had a sinful heart, just like every person born since Adam. No amount of water from the flood could wash it away. The spark of hope reappears as God makes another promise to never flood the earth again, but to preserve his creation. He seals it with a sign; a rainbow. Someday he would send the perfect King to wash away sin forever and restore his kingdom, just as he designed it to be.

overview

God promises never to send a flood to punish sin again, but instead to send a Savior to restore His Kingdom.

Day One

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about God’s just response to the wickedness of man and Noah’s faith:

Genesis 6:5-8; 13-14; 17-19; 22

Genesis 6:5 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7 So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

13 And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood…

17 For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth…18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female…

22 Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

What grieved God?

Who found favor in the eyes of the Lord?

Why did God tell Noah to build an ark?

How did Noah respond to God’s command?

How do you think you would respond to God’s command if you were in Noah’s position?

How does Noah’s faith encourage your faith?

Pray

Lead your family in a time of prayer over what you read.

Consider the ACTS model:
A – Adoration/ praise God (remember that this is part of worshiping God)
C – Confession (confess sin and your need of God)
T – Thanksgiving (thank God)
S – Supplication (ask God to supply your needs)

Today we will focus on A – Adoration:
LORD, You are in control of all things. You created all things and in your hands all things are sustained. Even the weather, when it rains and how much it rains, is in your control. You are holy and just and your judgment on sin is right and necessary. We praise you for your grace to save Noah and us. You never give up on your people, even when we sin against you. You are mighty to save! In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Day Two

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about how God saved Noah, his family, and the animals from the flood:

Genesis 7:1,4-5,12-18

Genesis 7:1 Then the Lord said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation.

4 For in seven days I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground.” 5 And Noah did all that the Lord had commanded him.

12 And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights.13 On the very same day Noah and his sons, Shem and Ham and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them entered the ark, 14 they and every beast, according to its kind, and all the livestock according to their kinds, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, according to its kind, and every bird, according to its kind, every winged creature. 15 They went into the ark with Noah, two and two of all flesh in which there was the breath of life. 16 And those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him. And the Lord shut him in.

17 The flood continued forty days on the earth. The waters increased and bore up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. 18 The waters prevailed and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the face of the waters.

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

How long did it rain?

Who was in the ark with Noah?

Can you imagine being inside a huge boat with all those animals? Describe what you think it might have been like.

Why did God choose to save Noah and his family? Help kids understand that God is merciful. Sin deserves punishment, so God’s judgment of sin is a right response. He chose to spare Noah, not because he was perfect but because Noah loved and trusted God. Noah had faith in what God told him, even though it was hard and everyone around him did not trust God.

How does God save us? Refer to Romans 3:23 and Romans 6:23 to show that the appropriate punishment for sin is death. God’s grace provided Jesus to take the punishment that we deserve for our sins. When we put our faith in Jesus alone for our salvation from sin, we are saved.

Today we will focus on C – Confession:
LORD, we recognize that you are the righteous judge over all. We confess that we have sinned against you, a holy, righteous God. We confess the ways we have gone our own way this week instead of trusting in you and following your ways that are for our good and your glory. Thank you for your grace in sending Jesus to save us from our sins. In his name we pray, amen.

Day Three

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about what happened when the flood dried up. God made a promise to never strike down every living creature again.

Genesis 8:15-17; 20-22

Genesis 8:15 Then God said to Noah, 16 “Go out from the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh—birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth—that they may swarm on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.”

20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. 22 While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions.

Who is in control of the rain, wind, and all weather?

How many days were Noah and his family in the ark?

What was one of the first things Noah did after getting out of the ark? Why?

What was God’s response to Noah’s offerings?

What characteristics of God do we see in this passage?

Today we will focus on T – Thanksgiving:
Heavenly Father, thank you for salvation. You saved Noah, his family, and two of every kind of animal in the ark. Thank you for your promise to faithfully maintain all seasons in their appropriate time, providing us with what we need to survive. Thank you for graciously giving us Jesus as our ultimate Savior from sin and death. In his name we pray, amen.

Day Four

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about the promise God made to never flood the earth again. He gave the rainbow in the sky as a sign of this promise.

Genesis 9:11-17

Genesis 9:11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the story or to retell the story. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

What stood out to you from these verses?

What characteristics of God does this passage show us?

What visual reminder of this covenant do we still have today? Do you think of God’s mercy and steadfast love when you see it?

How can the rainbow act as a sign of remembrance for us today?

Today we will focus on S – Supplication:
Acknowledge that God is your Provider and ask him to supply your needs and the needs of those around you according to His will.
