The King’s Creation Rebels, Part One

Week five | february 2-8

Day Five

The peaceful beginning of God’s kingdom takes a terrible turn. Adam and Eve’s position as rulers and representatives over God’s kingdom comes under attack by a sneaky enemy who deceives them into doubting God and his loving character. Adam and Eve decide they want to be more than just God’s representatives, they want to be like God and take control of the kingdom. Through their act of rebellion, sin enters the world. Sin is disobeying or breaking God’s law. The peace that once existed between God and creation was broken by sin. The perfect form of God’s kingdom was disrupted. But God was not shaken by this attack on his kingdom. He had a plan for his kingdom and no matter what attacks would come, his plans would prevail. One day he would send the perfect King to restore his kingdom, just as he designed it.

Overview

The kingdom of God is broken by sin.

Day One

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about the serpent, Satan:

Genesis 3:1a, Revelation 12:9, John 8:44b, John 10:10

Genesis 3:1a Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

John 8:44b …He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

What does this teach us about Satan, our enemy?

This may seem a little scary, but remember God is all powerful and nothing can overcome Him. Who did God send to conquer our enemy, Satan?

How can you resist and fight against our enemy, Satan? Help kids to see that through Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, we can resist the enemy!

Pray

Lead your family in a time of prayer over what you read.

Consider the ACTS model:
A – Adoration/ praise God (remember that this is part of worshiping God)
C – Confession (confess sin and your need of God)
T – Thanksgiving (thank God)
S – Supplication (ask God to supply your needs)

Today we will focus on A – Adoration:
God, you are Sovereign, ruling over all creation. You are Truth and in you there is no lie. We recognize we have an enemy who seeks to deceive us with his lies, but You have come to us in Truth to bring us life, through Jesus Christ our Savior. In You Lord, we can resist the enemy and have eternal life! In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Day Two

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about how the serpent deceived Eve:

Genesis 3:1-7; 2 Corinthians 11:3

Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

2 Corinthians 11:3 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

What is the first thing the serpent says to Eve?

What was the one rule God gave to Adam and Eve in the garden? (Gen. 2:17)

What was the second thing the serpent said to Eve?

Was that true or a lie?

Did Eve believe the serpent’s lie or did she trust in what God had said?

What happened after she sinned?

How are you tempted to believe the lies of the enemy instead of trusting in God’s truth?

Today we will focus on C – Confession:
Heavenly Father, we confess that we have sinned against you, a holy and perfect God. We had fallen into the trap of the enemy, just as Eve did, believing lies that make us think we can find pleasure and happiness our own way instead of in You. Help us to see the specific ways we have sinned and correct it in us. We want to be more like Christ! Amen.

Day Three

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about what happened after Adam and Eve sinned against God:

Genesis 3:8-13

Genesis 3:8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you? 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions.

What did Adam and Eve do when they heard God walking in the garden?

Why did God ask them what they had done? Doesn’t God already know what they did?

What was the first thing God did after Adam and Eve sinned (v.21) Why is this important?

What does God promise in Gen 3:15? Who is this offspring? Why is this important?

How do you respond when you sin?

How should you respond when you sin?

Today we will focus on T – Thanksgiving:
God, thank you for desiring a close friendship with us. Just as we saw you walking with Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, enjoying a perfect friendship, you desire that for all of your creation. Sin broke that perfect relationship, but you sent Jesus to be our Savior and take away the sin of the world. Thank you for loving us so much that you would do that! Thank you for making a way for us to be friends again. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen!

Day Four

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about how God knows all things and we can never hide from him:

Psalm 139:7-12, Jeremiah 23:23-24 (ICB)

Psalm 139:7-12

7 Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
9 If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
12 even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you.

Jeremiah 23:23 “I am a God who is near,” says the Lord. “I am also a God who is far away.” 24 “No one can hide where I cannot see him,” says the Lord. “I fill all of heaven and earth,” says the Lord.

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the story or to retell the story. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

Can we hide from God?

What stood out to you from these verses?

What does this teach us about God?

What does this teach us about man?

How should we respond to what we read?

Today we will focus on S – Supplication:
God, we know that You are our Provider. You give us all that we need. You are near to us always and we can never hide from you. We can come to you humbly, asking you to supply our specific needs today and by your grace through Jesus, You hear our prayers. We trust You to answer them according to Your will. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
