The Kingdom Promised: His Land, Part Two

Week nineteen | may 11-17

Day One

Day Two

Day Three

Day Four

Day Five

We are entering a new era for the people of Israel. Moses has passed away and Joshua has stepped up to lead the people into the promised land. God is with Joshua just as he was with Moses before him. God leads the people into victory against the enemies that inhabit the land and we see the final piece of the Abrahamic Covenant fulfilled. We see the spark of hope shine in unexpected places, like in Rahab, the woman of Jericho who heard of all that God did and had faith that he was the one true God! Rahab’s faith saved her and her family from the destruction of Jericho and placed her in the family of God. This spark of hope is a reminder that God had a plan from the beginning to use his treasured possessions to bless the rest of the world and gather people from every nation to worship him someday in his perfect kingdom, under his rule and blessing, just as he designed it to be.

Day One

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about Joshua taking over Moses’s role to lead Israel into the promised land:

Joshua 1:1-4, 7-9; 2:1-4, 8-14, 18

Joshua 1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, 2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel. 3 Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses. 4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your territory.

7 Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 2 And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there. 2 And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.” 3 Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.” 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them…

8 Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof 9 and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. 10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction. 11 And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. 12 Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign 13 that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” 14 And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.”

18 Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household.

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

Who has taken over Moses’ role of leading the people?

What did God command Joshua to do and not do in Joshua 1:7?

What is the name of the Canaanite woman in Jericho who put her faith in God?

What did she risk her life to do for the two Israelite spies?

What happened to her and her family as a result of this?

Pray

Lead your family in a time of prayer over what you read.

Consider the ACTS model:
A – Adoration/ praise God (remember that this is part of worshiping God)
C – Confession (confess sin and your need of God)
T – Thanksgiving (thank God)
S – Supplication (ask God to supply your needs)

Lord, we see your heart for the nations to know you in this story about Rahab. A foreigner and enemy of Israel puts her faith in you, the one true God, because she has heard of all you did and knows there is no god like you. Thank you for making a way for Rahab to be part of your family as well as us, through faith. Help us to have faith like Rahab, against all odds and even with the threat of death to trust you. In Jesus name, amen.

Day Two

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about how the Lord stopped the Jordan River from flowing and the Israelites walked across into the land of Canaan:

Joshua 3:7-17; 4:1-3, 6-7 (ICB)

Joshua 3:7 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to make you a great man to all the Israelites. So the people will know I am with you just as I was with Moses. 8 The priests will carry the Ark of the Covenant. Tell them this: ‘Go to the edge of the Jordan River and stand in the water.’” 9 Then Joshua said to the people of Israel, “Come here. Listen to the words of the Lord your God. 10 Here is proof that the living God is with you. Here is proof that he will drive out the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and the Jebusites. 11 This is the proof: The Ark of the Covenant will go ahead of you into the Jordan River. It is the Agreement with the Lord of the whole world. 12 Now choose twelve men from among you. Choose one from each of the twelve tribes of Israel. 13 The priests will carry the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord, the Master of the whole world. They will carry it into the Jordan ahead of you. When they enter the water, the river will stop flowing. The water will be stopped. It will stand up in a heap as if a dam were there.” 14 So the priests carried the Ark of the Covenant. And the people left the place where they had camped. Then they started across the Jordan River. 15 During harvest the Jordan is flooded. So the river was at its fullest. The priests who were carrying the Ark of the Covenant came to the edge of the river. And they stepped into the water. 16 Just at that moment, the water stopped flowing. It stood up in a heap a great distance away at Adam. This is a town near Zarethan. The water flowing down to the Sea of Arabah (the Dead Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed the river near Jericho. 17 The ground there became dry. The priests carried the Ark of the Covenant with the Lord to the middle of the river and stopped. They waited there while all the people of Israel walked across. They crossed the Jordan River on dry land.

Joshua 4:1 All the people finished crossing the Jordan. Then the Lord said to Joshua, 2 “Choose twelve men from among the people. Choose one from each tribe. 3 Tell the men to get twelve large rocks from the middle of the river. Take them from where the priests stood. Carry the rocks and put them down where you stay tonight.”

6 They will be a sign among you. In the future your children will ask you, ‘What do these rocks mean?’ 7 Tell them the Lord stopped the water from flowing in the Jordan. When the Ark of the Covenant with the Lord crossed the river, the water was stopped. These rocks will help the Israelites remember this forever.”

What did God say would be proof to the Israelites that he would go before them and drive out their enemies?

What happened when the priests walked into the Jordan River carrying the Ark of the Covenant?

What story from Israel’s history does this remind you of?

Why did God instruct the people to set up twelve large rocks?

Have you ever created a memorial of some kind to help you remember God’s faithfulness in your life? If not, consider how you can make a visual reminder of what God has done in your life or your family’s life.

Pray

Lead your family in a time of prayer over what you read.

C – Confession (confess sin and your need of God)
T – Thanksgiving (thank God)
S – Supplication (ask God to supply your needs)

Lord, we see another miracle of you stopping water from flowing so your people could cross over, as you did with the Red Sea! You are a God of wonders! Forgive us for thinking less of you and searching for other wonderful things that will not satisfy. We know that nothing compares to you. Thank you for continuing to show us that truth. Help us to be completely satisfied with you! In Jesus’ name, amen.

Day Three

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about God lead the Israelites to defeat the city of Jericho and saved Rahab and her family:

Joshua 6:1-5, 16-17, 24-25

Joshua 6:1 Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in. 2 And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor. 3 You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days. 4 Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5 And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.”

16 And at the seventh time, when the priests had blown the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city. 17 And the city and all that is within it shall be devoted to the Lord for destruction. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent.

24 And they burned the city with fire, and everything in it. Only the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord. 25 But Rahab the prostitute and her father’s household and all who belonged to her, Joshua saved alive. And she has lived in Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

What unique tactics did God instruct the Israelites to use to defeat the city of Jericho?

What happened to Rahab and her family in the battle of Jericho?

Lord, Isaiah 55:8 says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.” When we read about how you brought down Israel’s enemies at Jericho it is incredible! Only you can bring down an entire city by marching and shouting. Even though we know that your ways are not our ways we sometimes doubt that you can work through difficult situations. Help us have faith that you will work things out according to your good plans. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Day Four

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about how God gave Israel victory over all their enemies under Joshua’s leadership and at the end of his life he gives them one final reminder to obey all of God’s commands, just as Moses had commanded before him:

Joshua 21:43-45; 23:1-8, 11-13; 24:14-15

Joshua 21:43 Thus the Lord gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their fathers. And they took possession of it, and they settled there. 44 And the Lord gave them rest on every side just as he had sworn to their fathers. Not one of all their enemies had withstood them, for the Lord had given all their enemies into their hands. 45 Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.

Joshua 23:1 A long time afterward, when the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their surrounding enemies, and Joshua was old and well advanced in years, 2 Joshua summoned all Israel, its elders and heads, its judges and officers, and said to them, “I am now old and well advanced in years. 3 And you have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake, for it is the Lord your God who has fought for you. 4 Behold, I have allotted to you as an inheritance for your tribes those nations that remain, along with all the nations that I have already cut off, from the Jordan to the Great Sea in the west. 5 The Lord your God will push them back before you and drive them out of your sight. And you shall possess their land, just as the Lord your God promised you. 6 Therefore, be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left, 7 that you may not mix with these nations remaining among you or make mention of the names of their gods or swear by them or serve them or bow down to them, 8 but you shall cling to the Lord your God just as you have done to this day.

11 Be very careful, therefore, to love the Lord your God. 12 For if you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations remaining among you and make marriages with them, so that you associate with them and they with you, 13 know for certain that the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations before you, but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good ground that the Lord your God has given you.

Joshua 24:14 “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

How do we see God keep his promise to Abraham from Genesis 15?

What characteristics of God do we see through this?

What is the main thing that Joshua repeatedly reminds the people?

What warning does Joshua give if the people do not love God and obey his commands?

What choice does Joshua give to the people at the end of his time leading them? (Joshua 24:14-15)
