Day Five
This week you will fast forward hundreds of years into Israel’s future. As you read through the Holy Week scriptures to prepare for the celebration of Easter you will see how God’s faithfulness to his people remains constant. The sin of the world could not go unpunished and it required the perfect sacrifice. So God, being rich in mercy and abounding in steadfast love, sent his Son Jesus Christ to earth to live a perfect life and lay down his life as the substitution, taking the punishment for sin that we deserve. Then three days later he rose from the dead, conquering sin and death and proving his divine authority as the Perfect King, whose rule and reign extend over all the earth. Jesus did what we could never do for ourselves. Like many of Israel’s rescuers in the past, he was not who anyone expected, yet he is the exact one God chose from before the foundations of the world to save his people and restore God’s kingdom for eternity. Jesus makes it possible for God’s people to be in his kingdom under his rule and blessing, just as God designed it to be.
Overview
Jesus came to take away the sins of the world.

Day One
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and the last supper with his disciples before his death.
Matthew 21:6-11; John 13:1-5; 14-20
Matthew 21:6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. 8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
John 13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
14 And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
Discuss
Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:
Why did Jesus and his disciples go to Jerusalem? (To celebrate The Passover Festival)
What was Jesus riding on when he entered Jerusalem?
How was Jesus welcomed when he entered Jerusalem?
How do the people in your life welcome Jesus? Are they open to hearing about him? Excited to know him? Or are they hostile toward him? Talk about ways to speak truth and love to those who do not welcome Jesus.
What does Jesus do with his disciples in verses 14-20?
What do we do as part of our spiritual disciplines to remember Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins? Talk about Communion and why we observe it regularly.
Pray
Lead your family in a time of prayer over what you read.
Consider the ACTS model:
A – Adoration/ praise God (remember that this is part of worshiping God)
C – Confession (confess sin and your need of God)
T – Thanksgiving (thank God)
S – Supplication (ask God to supply your needs)
Jesus, you are the Servant King who came not to be served, but to serve others. We do not deserve your compassion, kindness, or love that you poured out on us when you died in our place for the punishment we deserve. Thank you for loving us to the point of death. We surrender our lives to you and ask that you help us never take the cross for granted! In your name we pray, amen.
Day Two
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about Jesus’ arrest and trial before being crucified.
Matthew 26:36-39, 47-50; Matthew 27:11-14, 17-26
Matthew 26:36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”
47 While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.
Matthew 27:11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.” 12 But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. 13 Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14 But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
17 So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. 19 Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.” 20 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” 23 And he said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!” 24 So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves.” 25 And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” 26 Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.
Discuss
Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:
Why do you think Jesus remained silent when the religious leaders were accusing him?
Why did the crowd choose to release Barabbas instead of Jesus?
Do you think Jesus had a choice of whether or not he would be crucified?
How does knowing that Jesus willingly chose to lay down his life to pay the punishment we deserve change you?
Jesus, you set your face to Jerusalem knowing exactly what awaited you there and chose to go anyway. You knew what would come when you stepped into that garden to pray, and you went anyway. We are like Judas the betrayer, forsaking the King for something fleeting. Forgive us for not loving and cherishing you as you deserve. Thank you for your obedience for our sake, even when you knew how hard it would be. Help us to feel the burden of our sins you felt as you prayed in the garden. We love you, Jesus. We pray in your name, amen.
Day Three
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about Jesus’ crucifixion.
Matthew 27:28-31, 45-51, 57-60
Matthew 27:28 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. 51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.
Discuss
Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions.
What did the people put on Jesus’ head? Why do you think they did it?
Why does Jesus say, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Explain to kids that in order for the punishment of sin to be paid fully, Jesus had to become sin, on our behalf. God had to allow Jesus to be delivered into the hands of his enemies and allow him to die. God did not comfort him or rescue him from it. God’s wrath for sin had to be poured out onto sin, thus onto Jesus. This was the most difficult part of Jesus’ death.)
Why did the curtain of the temple tear in two? What did the curtain separate?
How did Jesus fulfill the prophet’s prediction about the coming Messiah?
-He was beaten, whipped, and wounded.
-He was put on trial and thrown in prison.
-His hands and feet were pierced.
-He was killed like a criminal, then buried in a rich man’s tomb.
-God laid the punishment and guilt for all of our sins on Him.
-His life was made an offering for us.
-Because of Him, many will be made right with God.

Jesus you are the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! You fulfilled every prophecy that was spoken in preparation for you. You endured terrible abuse from those who hated you. Yet you did not retaliate or call down angels to save you as you could have done. You chose to love them, and us, to the point of death. Thank you for taking on the wrath of God that we deserve for our sin, so that we could be saved from it! Help us to live in a way that honors you, because you alone are worthy. In your name we pray, amen.
Day Four
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about Jesus’ resurrection:
Matthew 28:1-10; Luke 24:36-53; John 20:30-31
Matthew 28:1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”
Luke 24:36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate before them. 44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” 50 And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.
John 20:30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Discuss

What stood out to you from these verses?
Who were the first people to see Jesus resurrected? How did they respond?
What are some of the ways Jesus proved to his disciples that he was indeed the risen Lord?
What is one sign that shows he was truly human and not a spirit?
Why did John say he wrote about all that he had witnessed? (John 20:30)
Why is it important that we believe Jesus died and resurrected from the dead?
Pray

Jesus, Risen Savior, you conquered sin and death! You are victorious! Hallelujah! We praise your holy name! We deserved to be the one on that cross because we are guilty of sin against a holy God. Yet you took our place and through faith in you we are forgiven and receive your righteousness! Thank you for saving us! We ask that you help us grow in our understanding of you. Help us delight in you above all else. In your powerful name we pray, amen.
