The Kingdom Proclaimed, Part Three

Day Four

Day Five

When Jesus called his disciples, he had a great mission for them. He saved them and trained them to be fishers of men. He told them they would receive the Holy Spirit and that they would then go and tell people about the Good News (the Gospel) of Jesus everywhere they went. God’s plan was for the Gospel to spread all over the world so that all tribes, tongues, and nations could hear and be saved. He had given that promise to Abraham when he told him he would make him into the father of many nations and through him all nations would be blessed. That blessing for all nations is salvation through Jesus Christ, the good news! God is continuing to fulfill his promise through his church.

He has a great mission for those who put their faith in Jesus and become his followers, just like the disciples. We have a great privilege and responsibility to tell others about Jesus. There are millions of people on earth today who have never heard the life changing message of Jesus. The Bible is clear about how the church, including you, must be the ones to spread the Gospel and expand the Kingdom by telling others about Jesus, just as God designed it to be.

Day One

Read

Here are some verses that your family can read to learn about the message of the Gospel spreading after Jesus ascended and the church was formed. This passage tells us about how the Gospel continued to spread even while the church leaders worked on a problem that they were experiencing in the church.

Acts 6:-1-7

Acts 6:1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. 2 And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. 3 Therefore, brothers,  pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. 4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 5 And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. 6 These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them. 7 And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

Do you think it is important to pray before telling others about Jesus? What does this passage say about that?

Is it important to share your opinion or the Word of God when telling others about Jesus? What does this passage say about that?

Why is it important that we tell others about Jesus?

Who do you know that doesn’t know Jesus yet? What can you do this week to share The Gospel with them?

Pray

Lead your family in a time of prayer over what you read.

Consider the ACTS model:
A – Adoration/ praise God (remember that this is part of worshiping God)
C – Confession (confess sin and your need of God)
T – Thanksgiving (thank God)
S – Supplication (ask God to supply your needs)

Day Two

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about The Church and how we are to spread the Gospel to expand The Kingdom of God, even when that means facing persecution. Persecution is when others are mean or hurtful to you because of your faith. These verses help us to see that we are called and empowered by God to share the truth about Jesus with others no matter what they say or do because the gospel is worth it.

Acts 7:54-60, 8:2-4 (ICB)

Acts 7: 54 When the leaders heard Stephen saying all these things, they became very angry. They were so mad that they were grinding their teeth at Stephen. 55 But Stephen was full of the Holy Spirit. He looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God. He saw Jesus standing at God’s right side. 56 He said, “Look! I see heaven open. And I see the Son of Man standing at God’s right side!” 57 Then they all shouted loudly. They covered their ears with their hands and all ran at Stephen. 58 They took him out of the city and threw stones at him until he was dead. The men who told lies against Stephen left their coats with a young man named Saul. 59 While they were throwing stones, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” 60 He fell on his knees and cried in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” After Stephen said this, he died.

8: 2 Some religious men buried Stephen. They cried very loudly for him. On that day people began trying to hurt the church in Jerusalem and make it suffer. Saul was also trying to destroy the church. He went from house to house. He dragged out men and women and put them in jail. All the believers, except the apostles, went to different places in Judea and Samaria. 4 And everywhere the believers were scattered, they told people the Good News.

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

What happened in this passage? What did people do to Stephen? Why do you think they did that?

Do you think that people always want to hear about Jesus? Why or why not?

Sometimes God’s people get spread out away from their homes because people are mean to them for telling others about Jesus? Did that happen in this passage? Did God’s people stop telling others about Jesus even when others didn’t like it?

How can God reach more people with the Gospel by spreading his people out all over the world?

Who does our family know that needs to hear about Jesus? How can we share the love and truth of Jesus with them?

Day Three

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about the incredible account of Saul’s conversion from persecuting followers of Jesus to becoming a follower of Jesus himself. God transformed him and used him to tell others about Jesus all over the world. This shows us that God can and does save and use the most unlikely people to spread the Gospel.

Acts 9:1-19

Acts 9:1 But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank. 10 Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” 11 And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, 12 and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” 13 But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem. 14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.” 15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” 17 So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized; 19 and taking food, he was strengthened.

Discuss

Spend some time discussing as a family the journey through scripture you have taken so far.

How do we know from this passage that Paul didn’t always love Jesus or his people?

What did Jesus do to save Paul?

What assignment did God give to Paul?

How does Paul’s story show us that God can use anyone to spread the Gospel?

Do you sometimes feel like you can’t share the Gospel because of the mistakes you have made in life? How does Paul’s story help you to see that God can use people who have sinned and made mistakes? How does Paul’s story show you how God can use you to spread the Gospel?

Day Four

Read

Here are some verses for you and your family to read about Paul and Silas’ faith in the midst of difficult times. They never stopped trusting in Jesus and God saved many people through them.

Acts 16:25-31

Acts 16:  25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, 26 and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were unfastened. 27 When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” 29 And the jailer[e] called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

What were Paul and Silas doing in prison in the beginning of our passage?

What happened as Paul and Silas were praying and worshiping?

It is good to remember that God does things to prepare people’s hearts to hear the Gospel and believe in Jesus.  He did this in the heart of the jailer in this passage. What question did the jailer ask Paul and Silas?

How did Paul and Silas answer the jailer?  Do you think that this is the message we should also share with others who want to hear about Jesus? Why or why not?

Sometimes God might put you in hard situations so you can be in a position to share Christ with others. What hard situations do you think God puts his people in so they can have opportunities to share Christ with others?

Day Five: Family Sabbath

Be Present

Set aside distractions (electronics, work, chores, etc.) and spend time with God and each other.

Review

Review the memory verse for this week:

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:8

Pray

Spend time together in prayer, thanking God that he has ordained a day of rest and for the takeaways you’ve had from this week’s readings. Consider closing by praying the Lord’s Prayer together.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Play

Choose a fun activity to do together as your family rests from work. Here are some ideas:

  • Spend some time sharing testimonies of how you all came to know Jesus and talk about who God used to share the Gospel with you.
  • Visit a nursing home and sing hymns for the people there
  • Make a mosaic using scrap paper. Talk about how the mosaic reminds us that God takes broken people and makes them new through Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.
