The Kingdom Proclaimed, Part Five

Day Four

Day Five

Have you ever been on a long trip and just wanted to be back home? Why do we love being home? We could give many reasons but our homes are places of comfort. Home is also full of the people that we love. Inside each of us is a desire to be home. As followers of Jesus, we are part of God’s family and the Holy Spirit dwells within us, making us the temple of God! While we are on this earth, the presence of God dwells in us, making his home with us, reminding us we are not alone and helping us live in obedience to God. There is no longer a need for a temple built by man to hold the presence of God, as it once was in the Old Testament. The Bible says that as Christians, this world is not our home. No matter how good your home is here, there is still a better home waiting. We get to look forward to an even greater connection with God in heaven, where our home will be with him for eternity. So no matter how good or bad our lives are at times in this world, we can always look forward to one day being home in a perfect place living in the presence of the perfect God who loves us.

The Apostle Paul really looked forward to being home in heaven with Jesus. He knew that this world was not his home and that he was a citizen of the Kingdom of God. He also knew that while he was here on earth, his mission was to help others know Jesus. No matter how good or hard his life was, he remained encouraged knowing that one day he would be in God’s perfect Kingdom under his rule and blessing for eternity, just as God designed it to be.

Day One

 Read

Here are some verses for you to read with your family about how our faith in Jesus makes us children of God and citizens of heaven, our eternal home.

Philippians 3:7-21

Philippians 3: 7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. 16 Only let us hold true to what we have attained.17 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. 18 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

What will be so amazing about heaven, our eternal home?

Do you have bad days sometimes? How does remembering your home is heaven as a Christian help you to stay joyful when you have a bad day?

Read verse 21. What will Jesus do for us when we are home in heaven? Why is this such good news for us?

Do you look forward to being in heaven with Jesus one day? Why or why not?

Pray

Lead your family in a time of prayer over what you read.

Consider the ACTS model:
A – Adoration/ praise God (remember that this is part of worshiping God)
C – Confession (confess sin and your need of God)
T – Thanksgiving (thank God)
S – Supplication (ask God to supply your needs)

Day Two

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about our living hope and eternal inheritance found in Christ.

1 Peter 1:3-9

1 Peter 1: 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

What is an inheritance? (Parents can explain this to your kids if they don’t know). What are we promised as an inheritance in verse 4?

Will our inheritance in heaven ever be taken away? Why?

Read verse 6. Is life hard sometimes? How is life hard sometimes? How does knowing what waits for you in heaven make your hard days more hopeful?

The most amazing thing about heaven is that Jesus is there! This passage says that we love Jesus if we are Christians and we want to be with Him. What are some things you love about Jesus?

Day Three

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about how Jesus brings us back into a right relationship with God. As followers of Jesus we are part of God’s family and the Holy Spirit dwells within us, making us the temple of God! There is no longer a need for a temple built by man to hold the presence of God, as it once was in the Old Testament. The presence of God is among his people, just as he designed it to be. One day we will get to experience that presence to the fullest in heaven.

Ephesians 2:11-22

Ephesians 2:11 You were born non-Jews. You are the people the Jews call “uncircumcised.” Those who call you “uncircumcised” call themselves “circumcised.” (Their circumcision is only something they themselves do on their bodies.) 12 Remember that in the past you were without Christ. You were not citizens of Israel. And you had no part in the agreements with the promise that God made to his people. You had no hope, and you did not know God. 13 Yes, at one time you were far away from God. But now in Christ Jesus you are brought near to God through the blood of Christ’s death. 14 Because of Christ we now have peace. Christ made both Jews and non-Jews one people. They were separated as if there were a wall between them. But Christ broke down that wall of hate by giving his own body. 15 The Jewish law had many commands and rules. But Christ ended that law. Christ’s purpose was to make the two groups of people become one new people in him. By doing this Christ would make peace. 16 Through the cross Christ ended the hatred between the two groups. And after Christ made the two groups to be one body, he wanted to bring them back to God. Christ did this with his death on the cross. 17 Christ came and preached peace to you non-Jews who were far away from God. And he preached peace to those Jews who were near to God. 18 Yes, through Christ we all have the right to come to the Father in one Spirit. 19 So now you non-Jews are not visitors or strangers. Now you are citizens together with God’s holy people. You belong to God’s family. 20 You believers are like a building that God owns. That building was built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. Christ Jesus himself is the most important stone in that building. 21 That whole building is joined together in Christ. And Christ makes it grow and become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in Christ you, too, are being built together with the Jews. You are being built into a place where God lives through the Spirit.

Discuss

Spend some time discussing as a family the journey through scripture you have taken so far.

The verses we just read tell us that sometimes people, even God’s people, don’t get along with each other. In this world, we see that people are mean to each other and sometimes hate each other but Jesus has died for that hatred and has provided the way for people who don’t like each other to love each other. Everyone who believes in Jesus, is a citizen of heaven (heaven is their home) and they are one family that should live loving one another and at peace with one another.

What ways are people mean to each other in this world? Has someone ever been mean to you? Have you been mean to someone else?

Did Jesus die on the cross for us so we could fight with one another or so we would be at peace with and love one another? How can you bring peace and love to people in your family like Jesus wants you to?

How does knowing that all Christians are one big family, God’s family, help you to show love to other Christians?

Is everybody you know already part of God’s family? Do you know anyone who can’t say that heaven will be their home someday? What did Jesus do so they can be part of God’s family?

Day Four

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about how to live for Jesus. Paul knew it would be better to go home to a perfect heaven and live with the perfect God that he loved. Paul also knew that while he was here on this earth that he was to serve others and point them to Jesus.

Philippians 1:9-14, 19-30

9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. 12 I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, 13 so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. 14 And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

Yes, and I will rejoice, 19 for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, 20 as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. 24 But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, 26 so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. 27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, 28 and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. 29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, 30 engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

What are some things you can do to serve others and point them to Jesus while you are away from your heavenly home?

What people do you know that are serving God with their lives? What are they doing to love others and point people to Jesus?

Do you think that God has something special for you to do with your life on earth? What do you think it is?

Day Five: Family Sabbath

Be Present

Set aside distractions (electronics, work, chores, etc.) and spend time with God and each other.

Review

Review the memory verse for this week:

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,”
Philippians 3:20

Pray

Spend time together in prayer, thanking God that he has ordained a day of rest and for the takeaways you’ve had from this week’s readings. Consider closing by praying the Lord’s Prayer together.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Play

Choose something fun/intentional to do as a family. Here are some ideas:

  • Put out some picnic blankets at night and have everyone lie on them looking up at the stars. Talk about how awesome God is and how amazing heaven is. Encourage each child to share at least one thing about how awesome God is and how amazing heaven will be.
  • While heading home from church or other places today, bring up how you are heading home but also remind everyone that heaven is our ultimate home if we have believed in Jesus.
  • Spend some time thinking about people you know who are having a hard time in life. Write them cards and make a care basket for them to remind them that they are loved and of the hope that they have in Jesus.
