The Kingdom Proclaimed, Part Eight

Day Five
After the prophets, Israelites had to endure 400 years of silence. No messages came from God. Generation after generation the people longed for God to speak, to show signs that He had not abandoned His creation. The spark of hope for a Perfect King and restored Kingdom had almost faded away. At just the right moment, like a familiar voice coming through on a dark, lonely night, God broke through the despairing silence. The advent their hearts had been longing for since the garden, when sin began its attack on God’s perfect kingdom, had come at last. Shortly after God spoke to Zechariah about the birth of John, God spoke to a young girl in Nazareth, preparing her for the unimaginable role she would have in bringing forth the long awaited Messiah, the Promised King! God’s promised hope for the broken world was being fulfilled! Through humble means unlikely for such an anticipated King, God sent forth His Son to be a Servant to His People, doing for them what they could never do for themselves. The kingdom of God had come! The Perfect King would live to die, crushing the curse of sin. But death has no power in God’s kingdom and He would raise to fulfill the promise of ruling for eternity. Once again God’s people could be at peace with Him! Joy to the world, the Lord has come, let earth receive her King!
As we rejoice over the fulfillment of the first Advent, with the birth of Jesus, we recognize that God’s promise has not been completely fulfilled. Our hearts wait with renewed longing for the second Advent, when we will for eternity rejoice in the glorious completion of His promise! On that day our King will make all things new. We will inherit the greatest treasure, as His sons and daughters, in His Kingdom, under His rule and blessing, just as he designed it to be!

The promised King has arrived.

Day One
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read from Luke about John the Baptist, the one prophesied about in the old testament, God’s chosen person to prepare the way for the coming king, Jesus.
Luke 1:13-17, 57-60, 67-80
Luke 1:13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15 for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, 17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”
57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son.58 And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. 59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father, 60 but his mother answered, “No; he shall be called John.”
67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,
68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people 69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, 70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, 71 that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us; 72 to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, 73 the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us 74 that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, 78 because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

Day Two
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary, telling her the incredible news that she would bear a son, Jesus, the Son of God.
Luke 1:26-38; Galatians 4:4-7
Luke 1:26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” 35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Day Three
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about the angel of the Lord appearing to Joseph announcing that Mary would give birth to a son through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 1:18-24
Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”(which means, God with us).
24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

Day Four
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about the birth of Jesus:
Luke 2:1-21
Luke 2:1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. 8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 and an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praise God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. 21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

How did God use Caesar Augustus’ decree for everyone to be registered in their hometown to fulfill Micah’s prophecy about the birthplace of the Messiah? Help kids see God’s sovereign plans and that he never forgets his word. God told the prophet Micah what would happen hundreds of years in the future. God is omniscient–all knowing. He worked everything out just as he designed it, for his glory!
What did the multitude of heavenly hosts say to the shepherds?
Why do you think God chose to announce Jesus’ birth directly to the shepherds before anyone else?
Why is it so amazing that God sent his Son to be born as a human and live on earth?
