The Kingdom Fulfilled, Part Three

Week thirty-seven | september 15-21

Day One

Day Two

Day Three

Day Four

Day Five

Almost immediately after his ministry began, Jesus ran into problems with the Pharisees, the religious leaders of his day. So many things Jesus did seemed backwards to these leaders. He ate with sinners, healed the lame, fed multitudes, proclaimed to be Lord of the Sabbath, and confronted the Pharisees for their sinful hearts. Jesus taught his disciples to be wise and not allow the Pharisees teachings to lead them astray. As Jesus’ ministry grew, so did the opposition from the religious leaders. The fulfillment of God’s kingdom through Jesus was not what people expected, but it was exactly as God had designed it to be.

Day One

Read

Here are some verses for your family about the Pharisees’ opposition to a party Jesus attends:

Luke 5:27-32

Luke 5:27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,”Jesus said to him, 28and Levi got up, left everything and followed him. 29Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. 30But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

Why were the Pharisees mad at Jesus?

How did Jesus respond to them?

What do you think Jesus means when he says that the healthy don’t need a doctor, but the sick do?

Who do the Pharisees think are “sick”? Who does Jesus know is truly “sick” ?  Help kids understand that everyone is sick with sin. We are all in need of a Savior to cleanse us of our sin. (Romans 3:23)

Pray

Lead your family in a time of prayer over what you read.

Consider the ACTS model:
A – Adoration/ praise God (remember that this is part of worshiping God)
C – Confession (confess sin and your need of God)
T – Thanksgiving (thank God)
S – Supplication (ask God to supply your needs)

God, you truly know all things. You see into our hearts and know the areas where we are sick with sin. We fail to see our own sin, God, and so often get caught up in focusing on the sins of others. Thank you for being the physician who came to heal us all from the sin we fall into. Please give us hearts that long to be more like you, Jesus. In Your name, amen.

Day Two

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about how the Pharisees and Jesus interpreted Sabbath law.

Mark 2:23-28

Mark 2:23-28 23One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” 25He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?26In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.” 27Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

Why were the Pharisees mad?

How did Jesus correct them?

What really matters about the Sabbath?

What does Jesus mean when he says he is Lord of the Sabbath?

Day Three

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about Jesus healing on the Sabbath:

Mark 3:1-6

Mark 3:1 Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. 2Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. 3Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.” 4Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent. 5He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.”He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. 6Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.

Discuss

Spend some time discussing as a family the journey through scripture you have taken so far.

Why didn’t the Pharisees want Jesus to heal the man’s hand?

Why was Jesus angry?

Why were the Pharisees looking for a reason to accuse Jesus?

What is Jesus pointing out when he asks if it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath?

Day Four

Read

Here are some verses for your family to read about what defiles a person from Matthew 15:1-20.

Matthew 15:1 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 3 He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 5 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,”6 he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God. 7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
8 “‘This people honors me with their lips,

but their heart is far from me;
9 in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”
10 And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand: 11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” 12 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” 13 He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. 14 Let them alone; they are blind guides And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” 15 But Peter said to him, “Explain the parable to us.” 16 And he said, “Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? 18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. 20 These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”

Discuss

Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:

What did the Pharisees question Jesus about his disciples?

How did Jesus respond?

Jesus quoted the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 29:13). What was the point of what Isaiah said? (Help kids see that Jesus (and the prophet Isaiah) was calling the Pharisees hypocrites because their actions were merely external, not actually coming from a heart of love for God. Also, their teachings were not from God, but were full of man made traditions.)

What does Jesus call the Pharisees and why?

What does Jesus say defiles a person?
