The Kingdom Fulfilled, Part Seven
Week forty-one | October 13-19
Day One
Day Two
Day Three
Day Four
Day Five
As word about Jesus’ ministry spread, more and more people began wondering about Jesus and wanting to know who he was. He stood out from the other religious leaders of the day but there was confusion about who he really was. Even the disciples, his closest followers, were still uncertain about him and lacked faith. He demonstrates his authority over all creation by performing miracles. He shows that even the wind and the waves, and evil spirits obey his commands. Jesus has the power to calm any kind of storm, fear, confusion, or destruction in our lives. Jesus is the Perfect King who came to fulfill the promises of God and rule over the Kingdom of God with all power and authority. His earthly ministry was just the beginning of that fulfillment. One day, Jesus’ authority will be fully established on earth and there will be no more storms to calm. We will dwell in perfect peace with him as his people, in his kingdom, under his rule and blessing, just as he designed it to be.

Day One
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about Jesus’ miracle of feeding the 5,000 in John 6:1-15.
John 6:1After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. 3Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. 4Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. 5Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” 6He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. 7Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” 8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” 10Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. 14When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” 15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
Discuss
Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:
Why didn’t the people have anything to eat?
How did Jesus fulfill their needs?
What do you think the little boy who brought the loaves and fishes thought of this experience?
Why do you think feeding all those people was the sign people needed to believe in Jesus?
Pray
Lead your family in a time of prayer over what you read.
Consider the ACTS model:
A – Adoration/ praise God (remember that this is part of worshiping God)
C – Confession (confess sin and your need of God)
T – Thanksgiving (thank God)
S – Supplication (ask God to supply your needs)
God, you are a miracle worker. Nothing is too big for You! You created all things, and everything is under your command, all the way down to a little boy’s lunch. But Lord, we often forget to turn to you when we need help, and think our problems are just too big, the way the disciples did. Thank you, God, for showing us over and over again Your willingness to provide for our needs. Help us see more clearly the things we truly need, and give us the eyes to see when You provide. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Day Two
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about Jesus walking on the water in John 6:16-21.
John 6:16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
Discuss
Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:
How would you have felt if you saw a man walking on the water in the middle of the sea?
What changed the disciples’ feelings from scared to glad?
Why do you think Jesus walked to them on the water instead of just riding with them in the boat?
Have you ever been in a situation where you were scared? How would you have felt if you had heard Jesus say “It is I; do not be afraid” to you?
Day Three
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about Jesus calming the storm from Mark 4:35-41.
Mark 4:35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Discuss
Spend some time discussing as a family the journey through scripture you have taken so far.
Why were the disciples scared at the beginning of the story?
And why were they filled with fear at the end of the story?
Why do you think Jesus asked the disciples “Have you still no faith?”
How do you overcome fear or doubt in your own life?
Day Four
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about Jesus asserting his authority over the spiritual realm by casting out demons:
Mark 9:14-29
Mark 9:14 And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. 16 And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” 17 And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” 19 And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” 20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” 25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”

What were the disciples unable to do? Why?
How does Jesus demonstrate his authority over the spiritual realm?
What does Jesus say is possible with faith (belief that Jesus is the Son of God)?
What does the man with the demon possessed son cry out to Jesus?
What does Jesus point to as the way to grow in our faith (and a closer relationship with God)? (v.29)
