The King Eternal
Week One | January 5-11
Day One
Day Two
Day Three
Day four
Day Five
Before time began and creation was formed, God existed. God has always existed. He has no beginning and no end—he is eternal. He is unlike anything or anyone else. He is triune, which means three persons in one, God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
What was an eternal, triune God doing before he created? He was delighting in a perfect, loving relationship within the Trinity. It might be hard to imagine a perfect love relationship, but that is exactly what the Bible teaches us! God loves the Son. He is a perfect, loving Father. The Son is beloved by the Father, radiating the glory of the Father. The Spirit makes known the love of the Father. We worship the one true God who eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. There is none like God!

Day One
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about the eternal, triune God:
Psalm 90:1-2; Psalm 86:8-10; Romans 1:19-20
Psalm 90: 1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
Psalm 86: 8 There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours. 9 All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name.10 For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God.
Romans 1: 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Discuss
Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passages. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:
When was God created? (This is a trick question; God has no beginning because he has always existed.)
Is there anyone like God?
As we read about God’s character and eternal nature, how should we respond?
Pray
Lead your family in a time of prayer over what you read.
Consider the ACTS model:
A – Adoration/ praise God (remember that this is part of worshiping God)
C – Confession (confess sin and your need of God)
T – Thanksgiving (thank God)
S – Supplication (ask God to supply your needs)
Today we will focus on A – Adoration:
Lord, there is none like you! Before you created the mountains or the earth you existed. You are the everlasting God with no beginning and no end. You do wondrous things and no one can ever compare to you! You show us who you are in creation and all that you have made. We praise you! Amen.
Day Two
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about the words of Jesus that show us the eternal, triune nature of God:
John 17:5, 22-26
John 17:5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
John 17:22 “The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
Discuss
Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:
What existed before the world?
Why does Jesus want his followers to be one with God, as he is one with God?
How long has God loved Jesus?
Why does Jesus want to make known to us the love that God has for him?
Today we will focus on C – Confession:
Lord, we admit that we have sinned against you. We have chosen to go our own way instead of trusting you. Your desire is to be unified with us just as you and the Son are unified, but our sin has separated us from you. Thank you for making a way for us to be restored to unity through faith in Jesus! In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
Day Three
Read
Here are some verses for your family to read about the eternal, triune God:
Colossians 1:15-17; Hebrews 1:3
Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Hebrews 1:3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
Discuss
Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:
Who is the “He” that these passages are referring to?
By whom were all things created?
For whom were all things created?
Who is the radiance of the glory of God?
Who is the exact imprint of God’s nature?
How is the universe upheld?
Today we will focus on T – Thanksgiving:
God, your incredible triune nature is amazing. Thank you for showing us who you are in your Word. The more we read the more we see your wonder! Thank you for upholding the universe and every detail in it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Day Four
rrRead
Here are some verses for your family to read about Jesus, the Word, who was there in the beginning:
John 1:1-5; 8:58
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Truly truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
Discuss
Ask younger kids specific questions about the verses or to retell the passage. Ask older kids critical thinking questions. Here are a few suggestions:
Who is this referring to?
What does this teach us about Jesus?
Why does Jesus say, “Before Abraham was, I am?” Help kids see that Jesus does not say “I was,” because that would mean he was over 2000 years old. Instead, he expresses that he is not part of time and has no age in time because he has always existed. He proclaims oneness with God, who spoke to Moses as the “I Am” in Exodus 3:14.
How can knowing this help us trust Jesus even more?
Today we will focus on S – Supplication:
God, you have created all things by the power of your Word, Jesus, and you supply all our needs according to your will. We ask you to meet our specific needs, as only you can. Help us to shift our view of our situation and see it as you do. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
Day Five: Family Sabbath

God, thank you for giving us rest. You created us with limitations and command us to rest to remember You and all You provide. Help us rest in You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Play
Choose a fun activity to do together as your family rests from work. Here are some examples:
- Go for a walk in your neighborhood
- Write family goals for 2024
- Start a prayer journal, if you have not done that already. Begin writing down prayers for your family, friends, neighbors and the lost people in your life. Add to your prayer journal each week and see how God answers your prayers this year.
